Norwegian students' experiences in Kos

We want to start and say thank you so much for hosting us this week, 2nd Lyceum of Kos. It have been a great pleasure this week in Greece. Great people, Great Island. The host families was fantastic and met us with a big smile and we felt very welcome. The hosts themselves were nice and welcoming.

Workshop experiences during Erasmus+ project in Kos, Greece.

First off we were put into different groups which we stuck to for the entire project. It was students from Norway, Sweden, Austria, Poland and Greece mixed into all the groups. We started with some ice-breaking activities so everyone could get to know each other. From our experiences we think the group work was okay, but in the start it was a small problem with the Greeks speaking Greek among themselves and giving us little information about what happened, but this is something that changed and after 2 days almost all of the communication was in English so everyone could participate in the work at a higher level. We learned a lot about copyright, plagiarism, ethics & responsibilities on the Internet, Internet security, rules on the Internet and about cyberbullying. Everyone knew a lot of things about these topics already, but we feel that we now know more in depth of each of these topics and also learned more about how we should act on the Internet.

Host families

When we first arrived to Greece we were looking forward to meet our host families. It was special and very exiting since we didn’t know them, and hadn’t talked that much to them either.

We were very excited to see how it worked, and how it was.

The families were very welcoming and hospitable. They were always there if there was anything you needed, and they were someone to talk to. We all had very kind families, and it was fun getting to know them.

We were all happy with the hosts and had a great time.

It was very sad when we had to leave, and we are all hoping to have some contact with them in the future.

The cultural activities in Kos, Greece

On the first day we visited the Municipality of Kos, there we met the vice mayor, and we talked a little bit about the project (SIFA) and he also told us a little bit about the refugees.

After lunch we walked up to Asclepeion, which is probably the biggest attraction of Kos Island. Asklepeion was the first hospital in the world; it is named after  Asclepius, the God of medicine and healing.

At the Asclepeion there was a play performed by a teacher from the school, and some students. He performed the Hippocratic oath. There was also a guide that told us about Asclepeion and how it was when the hospital was in use.

The second day we visited the Casa Romana, which is a roman house showing how the architecture were back in the Roman times. Casa Romana has 36 rooms and a group of 3 atriums, which were supposed to provide light and air to surround the rooms. Each of the atrium has a small fountain in the middle.  The first atrium used to have a small statue of Asclepius in the hallway. The second atrium has a floor decorated with dolphins and a sea-nymph. The third atrium is the biggest of all.

On the fourth day we went to Rhodes, to see the Throne of Helios, a 9D cinema, located at the old cinema “St. George”, which was the first cinema in Rhodes, built by the Italians in 1927.

It is now a museum and a 9D cinema. The Throne of Helios is about Helios, the god of the sun, who gets his own island, and we see the development of his island, and how it progresses over time.

Integration and group activities in the evening

We felt that there was a little bit hard to fit into the big group in the start because everybody talked in their own language. We are sure that this was not only us feeling this.  We knew that all of the people in on this project were kind and great people but in the start, it was quite hard to get to know each other because everybody talked each other languages. This developed into not being a problem at all into the week because then everybody started talking English, and that fitted everybody perfectly because then it was easier to know what each other talked about and to get in to that conversation. We all have gotten great friends that we still have contact with and that we hope we never will lose contact with each other. The start of the week started a bit hard with everybody just talking with those who came from the same country but this changed more and more into the week and we all became good friends.

The group activities we did in the evening was fun. It was not always so easy for us from the other countries to understand what we were going to do and when we were going to do it. This also changed into the week and we had full control on what the plans for the evening was. We from Norway thinks that the night that we were out bowling and eating at the restaurant definitely was the best and most fun night. The night at the beach as well was quite fun. All in all this have been a fantastic week that none of us will ever forget. Thank you Kos!
