HandelsakademieYbbs

HandelsakademieYbbs on the Danube (HAK Ybbs) in Austria is a secondary school focusing on economics and media technology. ICT has been applied for many years, in at least on third of our classes each student is equipped with laptops; we make use of digital register, school platforms and 5 computer labs. Many teachers are experienced in e-learning, programmingand the use of educational software. International project management is part of our curriculum and has enabled us to be coordinator of three Comenius projects and other youth projects with partner schools from all over Europe. Lately we have also been concentrating on cooperative open learning, being coordinator for COOL for our province. We have always promoted the use of electronic media, however, we have felt the need to think more about risk and hazards of computer technology and online activities lately, which is why we embrace the ideas of this project.

The Fridagymnasiet upper secondary school

The Fridagymnasiet upper secondary school in Vänersborg, Sweden, is an independently run school founded in 2006. It is part of the Fridaskolorna school organisation with five compulsory schools in the western part of Sweden. The school is quite small with 130 Students and 20 staff.

It has an outspoken ICT vision, with 1-1 (one laptop per person) for all staff and students, using online books, digital platforms, shared documents etc. We, i.e. students and staff, are in the process of designing a new platform for schools to replace a number of programmes needed for administration, student presence, budget, pedagogical planning, documentation, evaluation, assessment, parent information etc. This also means there is a plan for IST for the coming years implementing this new tool.

Fridagymnasiet has been involved in International projects since 1999 and has coordinated three Comenius- as well as three Youth projects together with the Austrian partner school, among which was participation in the WYPS - World Youth Peace Summit held by the UN in Sarajevo in 2004. The school has experience in hosting meetings and exchanges and the students always cooperate with another European partner school to make an exchange during their third and final year.

The Fridagymnasiet also has a clear intention to provide international influences at school, eg. exchange students and teacher trainees and teacher trainers from universities in other countries, to create various arenas for language- and interdisciplinary collaborations in projects using ICT and digital forums but also to create the opportunity for personal meetings with students from other countries and study trips to implement the learning of democratic and ethic values.

The Swedish National Agency presented the Fridagymnasiet last Comenius project as a good project example and the contact person lectured about project management to teachers from all over Sweden.

Products and Research for SIFA

RESEARCH

SIFA questionnaire

Research will be done in two ways. More general research with a pre-test (Nov 2014) and a Post-test (June 2016) and a smaller scale research before and after each short term meeting (Austria, Norway, etc.).

Research serves as an intellectual output that is beyond plagiarism and upgrades the quality of the results, but it also serves as a tool for internal evaluation. We have defined the following research questions concerning 5 major problems/topics related to internet use (addiction, health, security, ethics, safety):

1st research question: Do students know what every problem (topic) is about? We will also check for awareness.

2nd research question: Have students experienced problem (the topic is about)?

3nd research question: Do students know what to do if they (or their friends) experience this?

General research results::

Smaller scale research results before and after each short term meeting (Austria, Norway, etc.):

Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace

Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace im. P.Skargi in Grojec is an upper secondary school preparing students, aged 15 to 18, for university education. The school is one of the oldest ones in the district of Grojec and in the whole Mazowiecke Province. It was founded in 1912. There are 50 teachers and about 600 students in the school. The secondary school students come from different social backgrounds.

A large number of students come from rural areas and most of them need to be strongly motivated to take an active part in school life. Even though there are a few organizations existing at school (e.g. Red Cross, Volunteers' Club, Film Discussion Club or Students' Sport Club), they still need additional, multicultural activities so that they could be more actively involved in the school life and cooperate more willingly, understanding the importance of both their cultural roots and respect for different social and cultural backgrounds. There are a few students of ethnic minorities.

The school is situated in a small town (about 15 thousand inhabitants), which makes it easier to be in touch with students' parents in order to solve problems immediately. The students feel the need of, and have deep interest in, learning about other cultures and making friends with students from abroad.
